Can the Senate maybe do it’s J-O-B? I’m narrowly talking about the AUMF.
On June 17th the House Voted to repeal the 2002 AUMF but the Senate was like - nah hard pass it will have to wait until mid-July…
Department of Defense - June 27, 2021 Press Release -which reads in part;
…the U.S. strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to the border between those countries. Several Iran-backed militia groups, including Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS), used these facilities.
As demonstrated by this evening's strikes, President Biden has been clear that he will act to protect U.S. personnel. Given the ongoing series of attacks by Iran-backed groups targeting U.S. interests in Iraq, the President directed further military action to disrupt and deter such attacks. We are in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq for the sole purpose of assisting the Iraqi Security Forces in their efforts to defeat ISIS. The United States took necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action designed to limit the risk of escalation - but also to send a clear and unambiguous deterrent message.
To be clear I’m not criticizing the Biden Administration to tonight’s air strikes - I have immense faith in President Biden and Defense Secretary Austin —
- The US House of Representatives voted on H. R. 256 - AN ACT To repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 on June 17, 2021
Roll Call Vote No: 172
Passed/agreed to in House: On passage Passed by the Yeas and Nays: 268 - 161
I’m criticizing the Senate for once again kicking the AUMF can down the road for the umpteenth time and last Friday’s report that:
Iraq AUMF repeal vote delayed until mid-July
…which was enacted by Congress in via PUBLIC LAW 107–40—SEPT. 18, 2001 and
PUBLIC LAW 107–243—OCT. 16, 2002 - AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE AGAINST IRAQ RESOLUTION OF 2002
The Senate adjourned Thursday until July 12, and Menendez is expected to hold the briefing shortly after its return. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., a co-sponsor of the repeal resolution with Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., said he expects the markup on July 20.
Again I trust the Biden Administration and the current Defense Secretary concerning tonight’s drone strike but I am tired of Congress —mainly the Senate ignoring how out dated the AUMF is…
