Prompted by the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election, on November 25, 2020, ROGERS and COPELAND began to plan an attack against a target or targets they associated with Democrats. By November 29, 2020, they had identified the John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters in Sacramento, California, as their first target, and made plans to attack it using incendiary devices. ROGERS and COPELAND believed that the attacks would start what they called a “movement.” They discussed the attack in detail and on numerous occasions.

Well here’s a relatively dumb question - how did Federal Law Enforcement know Copeland called one of the III%ers leaders. Furthermore how did Law Enforcement know that Copeland received instructions to change his wireless telephone service provider and told him to delete everything. I mean I suppose Copeland could have come clean during a post arrest interview—the other possibility is there might have been a judicially authorized Pen Trap
Law enforcement officers searched ROGERS’s home and business on January 15, 2021 and seized between 45 and 50 firearms, including at least three fully-automatic weapons, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and five pipe bombs. Officers arrested ROGERS that day.
…COPELAND learned of ROGERS’s arrest the next day and immediately contacted a militia group to which both he and ROGERS belonged. One of the militia group’s leaders advised COPELAND to switch to a new communications platform and delete everything he had…

did corruptly alter, destroy, and conceal records, documents, and other objects, to wit, stored communications with Ian Rogers, or attempt to do so, with the intent to impair their integrity and availability for use in an official proceeding, to wit, the federal grand jury investigation involving the January 15, 2021 arrest of Ian Rogers in Napa, California, and the criminal proceedings before a district court
July 15, 2021 Motion to detain Defendant Copeland
Shortly after the Court unsealed the July 7th indictment, Prosector filed a Motion to Detain (see NDCA-ECF) Defendant Copeland. As Defendant Rogers was taken into Custody back in January 2021. In the Government’s July 15th Motion -that’s just the opening/introductory paragraph and it’s pretty brutal:

Rogers and COPELAND were upset with the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election. So they began to plan a series of violent attacks against targets associated with Democrats. Though they understood that they would be viewed as domestic terrorists,1 they hoped that their violent acts might start a movement to overthrow the government. The planning began on November 25, 2020, using encrypted messaging applications

The Prosector correctly points out that COPELAND encouraged Rogers. He would convey antidotal comments like:
“If we see [Trump] can’t win we strike” and “If they don’t listen to trump they will hear us”. On January 4, 2021, COPELAND initiated the discussion of violent attacks following the January 6, 2021 certification of the election results:

… Copeland joined the military in December 2013 and began basic training in January 2014, but was arrested for desertion in May 2014. He was arrested for desertion again in October 2016. He separated from the military in November 2016, and received an “Other than Honorable” discharge. His discharge code indicates that he was discharged in lieu of court martial…

He sent Rogers excited messages, “REVOLUTION” “REVOLUTION” “REVOLUTION” “I’m fucking juiced!!!!!” “I’m bout to throw my gear on and drive around and punish sombitces” “Bro I’m juiced” “I have my g19 in my hand,” he said, referring to his Glock 19-style polymer 80 pistol.
COPELAND was eager to get in on the action: “Damnit I wanna roll into sac geared up” he said, referring to his military-style tactical gear and weapons, “Drink 4 Red Bull’s and fuck shit up”. He is an extremist who abuses steroids and fantasizes about violence. The danger he poses toanyone with opposing political views is obvious.

Five Pipe Bombs and thousands of rounds of ammunition, at least 48 guns “…charging Ian Benjamin ROGERS with unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device, in violation of 26 U.S.C. §§ 5861(d), 5845(a)(8), and 5845(f). I swear this case sounds extremely familiar — I think it might have been the very last case I tweeted about before the untimely demise of my Twitter account —
Officers seized a total of 49 firearms from ROGERS’s home and business, and approximately two dozen ammunition boxes containing thousands of rounds of ammunition. Several of the firearms, including what appears to be a kit-built replica MG-42 belt-fed machine gun, appear to be capable of firing fully automatic. A firearms expert is examining those weapons to determine if they are machine guns.
In a post-arrest interview, ROGERS admitted that he had built the pipe bombs, but said that they were for entertainment purposes only…text messages recovered from ROGERS’s phone, indicate that the pipe bombs were not just for entertainment purposes…

At what point will Trump be forced face the criminal consequences of his dangerous & deadly lies. He has gleefully incited violence. Trump has literally pitted Americans against other Americans —specifically taking up arms to either kill or gravely injury Democrats. His words have consequences, or at least they should.
…text messages recovered from ROGERS’s phone indicate his belief that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election, and his intent to attack Democrats and places associated with Democrats in an effort to ensure Trump remained in office.

For example, in a message that I believe ROGERS sent on January 10, 2021,2 he said, “We can attack Twitter or the democrats you pick” and “I think we can attack either easily”. When the other person responded, “Hmmm” and “Let’s go after Soros,” ROGERS said, “We can attack Twitter and democrats easy right now burn they’re shit down,” whereas targeting “Soros,” which I believe is a reference to George Soros, would require a “road trip.” The next day, ROGERS sent another message to the same person: “I want to blow up a democrat building bad”. “
And with that I think you should be sufficiently informed about both of these defendants, their criminal complaint, morphing into an indictment and then having the USAO throw down the gauntlet. There’s not a goddamn patriotic thing about targeting an organization or individual simply based on their political ideologies. My closing argument is:

Thankfully they got these two. In light of Trump’s continued push of the lie, along with media outlets propagandizing the lie, how many other domestic terrorists are planning similar events. That question keeps me up.
This is positively chilling. So glad these two were caught. Now . . . let's see them get a nice, long prison sentence!
