UN-HCR updated (civilian) fatalities in Russia’s brutal war on Ukraine. Putin is a bloodthirsty murderer. Period. Full Stop
And no one —I mean no one should trust anything the Russian government says. Because what you should pay attention to is what Russia actually does. Their actions often contradict their statements
As previous noted, late last week I provided my readers with the “Official” UN-HCR’s casually numbers, but I opted to focus on fatalities. As typically “casualty” numbers include: injuries, prisoners of war, those who desert the war theater. And it’s genuinely difficult to wrap your head around the near double the fatalities reported on March 21, 2022. You can read more here.
It seemed important that you know the “official fatality number” and that’s why I embedded a specific query ←which is specifically setup to return the most updated numbers first. . Again these numbers were current as of March 21, 2022
UNHCR -Ukraine: civilian casualty updates:
March 21, 2022 a total of 902 killed (179 men, 134 women, 11 girls, and 25 boys, as well as 39 children and 514 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
a total of 1,459 injured (156 men, 117 women, 22 girls, and 16 boys, as well as 60 children and 1,088 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
In Donetsk and Luhansk regions: 992 casualties (248 killed and 744 injured)
In other regions of Ukraine (the city of Kyiv, and Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Zhytomyr regions), which were under Government control when casualties occurred: 1,404 casualties (669 killed and 735 injured)
And about a week later, what many of us feared has now fruition into our collective worst nightmare, especially for those innocent Ukrainians fleeing their homeland. Again ever mindful of the “fog of war” and how disinformation and misinformation can exacerbate that fog. Making it difficult to discern what’s fact v fiction. It is imperative that any reporter or researcher shows their readers where the data/facts originate from.
From 4 a.m. on 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation’s armed attack against Ukraine started, to 24:00 midnight on 29 March 2022 (local time), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 3,090 civilian casualties in the country:
March 30, 2022 updated: 1,189 killed and 1,901 injured.
This data includes (in the aggregate) -the reason I think you should pay attention to the “official “ UNHCR numbers is multi-fold… beyond the horrible innocent deaths —if you really “trust” what Russia says —then my response is watch what Russia does. The Russian Government lies on a pathological level. They have the temerity to lie (with a straight face) to reputable news organizations. Russia is an expert in actual gas lighting and disinformation and misinformation. Hence the Hybrid-War Doctrine. Again these are the most updated “official” UNHCR casually numbers (see UNHCR query ←which I purposefully set up to return the entire tracking of casualties.
I could be wrong but I don’t think the UNHCR’s press release includes the fatales of the Mariupol theater. But again I could be wrong about that. Sadly only time will tell and you should mentally prepare yourself for the strong likelihood that tens of thousands of innocent Ukrainians have been murdered by Putin and his incompetent military…
a total of 1,189 killed (239 men, 172 women, 17 girls, and 34 boys, as well as 57 children and 670 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
a total of 1,901 injured (218 men, 164 women, 36 girls, and 30 boys, as well as 76 children and 1,377 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
In Donetsk and Luhansk regions: 1,363 casualties (393 killed and 970 injured)
On Government-controlled territory: 1,055 casualties (328 killed and 727 injured)
On territory controlled by the self-proclaimed ‘republics’: 308 casualties (65 killed and 243 injured)
In other regions of Ukraine (the city of Kyiv, and Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Zhytomyr regions), which were under Government control when casualties occurred: 1,727 casualties (796 killed and 931 injured)
Bipartisanship has returned to DC…
In addition —apparently bipartisanship is still a thing in DC (granted under the Trump administration I momentarily lost hope that bipartisanship would never happen) —so it’s heartening to see when it comes to Russia’s cruel and barbaric war on Ukraine —especially this March 22, 2022 letter to President Biden specifically concerning the proposed intake of over 600 Ukrainian Orphans.
The March 22, 2022 letter reads in part:
…express our strong support for the efforts of a coalition of Ukrainian Americans to transport approximately 600 Ukrainian orphans, together with their caretakers, from Lviv to a temporary stay in the United States…
Senators to Biden Administration —send more aid faster and deadlier…
It seems incomprehensible to me that president (nope I’m never going to use a capital P) Trump’s first impeachment was his disgusting attempt to withhold nearly $425M in aid to Ukraine “I need a favor though…” and while I certainly agree (in substance and scope) of the bipartisan March 29, 2020 Letter to President Biden’s National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.…which reads in part:
“…America’s commitments to Ukraine and to our NATO allies demand we expedite the delivery of weapons and capabilities to our allies and partners; Ukraine can win this fight if we help them win this fight…Above all else, our commitment to our allies and partners keeps Americans prosperous and keeps our families safe.”
…the strategy must deliver Ukraine necessary weapons to defend itself, counter the Russian forces’ advance, and give the Ukrainian people a chance to win the war…
It is clear that the bipartisan letter strongly conveys “time is of the essence” and that any undue delays means more innocent Ukrainians will likely loose their lives. It’s been over a month since Putin decided (likely unilaterally) to wage war against Ukraine. At the onset Ukraine not only mobilized —but their fierce resistance and defense of their sovereignty —has only hardened. But I do think the longer Putin’s war continues the death toll will skyrocket. And America, along with our Allies has a moral obligation to assist our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.
Conversely it is also important to remember that earlier this month President Biden formally announced an $800 million in additional security/defense for Ukraine. And you do not need to take my word for it. I now refer you to the Biden White House fact sheet (I strongly urge you to read the embedded fact sheet) —which states and itemizes the latest package;
800 Stinger anti-aircraft systems;
2,000 Javelin, 1,000 light anti-armor weapons, and 6,000 AT-4 anti-armor systems;
100 Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems;
100 grenade launchers, 5,000 rifles, 1,000 pistols, 400 machine guns, and 400 shotguns;
Over 20 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenade launcher and mortar rounds;
25,000 sets of body armor; and
25,000 helmets.
But it’s the final paragraph in the March 18, 2022 fact sheet that I think you should read, carefully…especially the very last sentence, which reads in part”
The United States continues to expedite the authorization and facilitation of additional assistance to Ukraine from our Allies. At least 30 countries have provided security assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. In 2022, the Department of State authorized third-party transfers of defensive equipment from more than 14 countries, a number that continues to grow as Allies and Partners increase support to Ukraine.
And lastly your daily dose of saltwater -ocean therapy— no music other than the waves “lapping” the sand…
Now if you’ll excuse me I have about 780 pages of a depo transcript that requires my immediate attention because it’s not like those bonbons are going to eat themselves… <snort> I hope the factual data in this article helps answers questions or provides some clarity in the “fog of war”…
Be Well -Filey
PS - President Biden recently released:
Notice on the Continuation of the National Emergency With Respect to Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities because Russia’s hybrid-war means America’s critical infrastructure continues to be targeted by Russian Cyber Criminals and the private sector needs to snap out of the cyber defense “set it and forget it” otherwise their failure to shift on the (cyber) fly means these private companies are likely to be targeted as well…
These significant malicious cyber-enabled activities continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States. For this reason, the national emergency declared on April 1, 2015, must continue in effect beyond April 1, 2022. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13694.
A sobering read. Thank you, Filey.
It's not just infrastructure. My other half had his paypal account hacked by russians and the other day, someone in russia tried to access his last pass account - and our passwords are not easy. Be careful out there, everyone!!!
