Change is coming...Mr Ellis’ family are owed justice. Exactly how many times does an unarmed African American man/woman need to say “I can’t breathe” before you remove your knee?
The audacity of the "This video is not the aha moment they are pretending it is." I volunteered for expert witness prep for the last trial, I will GLADLY do it again, omg I am hot right now.
As my littles say - mama breathe the fire inside of you is growing too hot. I’m glad you found this article because I oddly had you in mind. The witnesses and their selflessness of putting themselves in danger - I don’t know why but it made me both sad and grateful. Their courage is something I wanted to make sure my readers understood what they did. Also you’re one helluva an advocate and I pity the fool who would try to impeach you on cross.
I didn't realize how much I'd been holding my own breath until I'd finished your piece, Mic. Even knowing the outcome, I, too, was very fearful for those who dared to memorialize the assault/murder.
"The statement of probable cause now includes new witnesses, their statements, a forensic (data video and audio) reconstruction of the timeline that included the aforementioned new information. This is extraordinary both in terms of substance and materiality because it completely eviscerated the horrid initial investigation…"
Re: the use of the word 'extraordinary" to describe the investigation of the investigation:
I hope these comeuppances herald a change in either
-attitudes of corrupt law enforcement OR
-'look fors' that inform new hiring practices in law enforcement
I hope that these accountability trials lead to permanent change. "Evisceration" (perfect word, that) is essential, and finally - perhaps - imminent.
It was really difficult to slog through the new statement of probable cause because it became clear that Law Enforcement helped cover up what these officers did to Mr Ellis, even with a more exhaustive timeline - The Whole event lasted under 10 minutes (I think it was officially 5 minutes and 22 seconds) but what these brave witnesses did is they helped ensure justice for Mr Ellis & his family, it’s not lost on me that these witnesses put their own lives in danger in order to accurately video the events. Nothing will bring Mr Ellis back but I think inching closer to Justice means his death is not in vain. I really am not a supporter of defund the police - I’d like to see substantial “refunding” of police to include de-escalation, social workers and mental health experts -but this case really ranks up there with similar heinous cases involving law enforcement
It took me over an hour to get through the revised statement of probable cause - because I couldn’t believe what I was reading. But felt it was important to my readers/followers to slog through it. Hope you & yours have a great Memorial Day weekend too...

This was a difficult story for you to write. But thank you for doing it anyway. Have a beautiful Memorial week-end with your family. ❤️
