Dear USCP Lt Byrd - thank you-
I’m not glorifying the fact Lt Bryd was forced into using lethal force, I feel bad for Ms Babbit’s family. I’m just grateful that he did his job and that he likely saved numerous lives on January 6th.
It goes without saying, yes Ms Babbit’s family is grieving the loss of her life. I like many of you understand their anger and can respect the unimaginable pain they are dealing with.
Notwithstanding Lt Byrd’s actions likely saved numerous lives during the January 6th Domestic Terror attack. Earlier this week I wrote about the US Capitol Police Officer —but it seemed important enough to provide you with the recently televised TV interview of Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd.
On January 6th Lt Byrd showed immense bravery and his NBC News Interview is equally as brave. If possible you should watch his interview
“I know that day I saved countless lives,”
“I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger. And that’s my job.”…
”…I do my job for Republican, for Democrat, for white, for Black, red, blue, green,” he said. “I don’t care about your affiliation.”…He noted that when Trump was president, he escorted him through the Capitol on numerous occasions. “If he was in the Capitol and I was responsible for him, I’d do the same thing for him and his family,” Byrd said.
Lt Byrd stated he discharged his firearm a “last resort.” —when the mobbed repeatedly ignored his lawful commands..
“I tried to wait as long as I could…I hoped and prayed no one tried to enter through those doors. But their failure to comply required me to take the appropriate action to save the lives of members of Congress and myself and my fellow officers.”
“…imperative was to inform the members to remove their pins..”
“One of the things that was imperative was to inform the members to remove their pins to allow them to blend in,” Byrd said. “To remove their jackets, to look like staff as much as possible.”
“They talked about killing me, cutting off my head,”
Lt Byrd also disclosed that he has been the target of vile racist verbal attacks and the adverse impact on his own family… if you think that law enforcement wakes up everyday and wants to take the life of another human being, then I can’t help or rationalize with you. Last resort. Repeat after me, last resort. Ms Babbitt repeatedly ignored the lawful commands. Members of the House were (likely) less than 100 feet away from the Speaker’s Lobby Entrance because they were evacuating. And yes it’s disheartening for the Babbit family but I’m also extremely grateful for Lt Byrd’s courage and bravery in doing his job.
“It’s all disheartening, because I know I was doing my job.”
The hardest part, he said, has been the effect on his family. A tear slid out of Byrd’s eye and trickled down his right cheek as he lamented how the life he built has been upended.
“Sometimes, you can’t do anything but cry,” Byrd said, his voice growing heavy. “You felt like you did your job. You helped protect our legislative leaders of this country and you fought for democracy and keeping them established.”
And lastly you don’t have to agree with me but I’ll defend the US Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department meaning I’ll go to the mat for them because they put their bodies in between Trump’s Domestic Terrorist and they fought to protect our Democracy. The debt of gratitude we owe Lt Byrd and countless other law enforcement officers, can not be repaid beyond making sure the facts out proliferate the sick and twisted Trump-QANON-MAGA narrative.
If the Babbit family wants to be mad at someone, then they can start with Donald J Trump. The truth is Donald J Trump radicalized Ms Babbit, and countless other Americans. He then told his domestic terrorist where and who to attack. And like lemmings or fully indoctrinated cult members they went to the Capitol. Sorry but that’s what the facts are. Lastly it is absolutely unpatriotic to target, harass and threaten Lt Byrd or any other Law Enforcement Officer that held the line on January 6, 2021…
-looks around and slowly steps down from my soapbox…
ps full disclosure I originally incorrectly used the wrong last name, because apparently my fingers and autocorrect decided to clash. So that’s one for autocorrect and zilch for Filey…again apologies for the confusion I may have caused.
PS —Apparently my fingers and my keyboard autocorrect clashed. Meaning I inadvertently published this article using Byrd which was autocorrected of Boyd. Again I apologize for any confusion I may have caused. I suppose that serves me right for rushing out a newsletter. Me goes and sits in a corner to contemplate my shitty life choices <snort>
Eloquently written Filey. I'm looking so forward to watching Lt.Boyd's interview tonight. I think it's with Lester Holt and his NBC Nightly News program. So much sacrifice made by these officers, heart breaking to observe.
