There is a current attempt to smear John McCain, to a large extent due to Lincoln Project's Steve Schmidt. He did a long diatribe on Twitter against not just Meghan McCain, who I don't like, but against her father, who I do, greatly.
The reason I'm writing about it here is that The Nation's old hit piece on McCain as well as one by John Solomon and Jeffrey Birnbaum match Schmidt's allegations almost word for word. Birnbaum is the President of BGR Group, a PR firm representing Putin interests at least until 2021. They also represent Alfa Bank.
I don't know Schmidt's motivation other than hatred of Meghan McCain but slandering her father should be off limits. But the Alfa Bank connection set my neck hairs on end.
